about

This is an old song of mine, written when I was playing in a punk band in San Francisco. I couldn't sleep owing to an overuse of popular local stimulants, so I wrote this in the dawn. Back then, it had a dumber name and chorus - "I'm on hold, I'm on ho-o-o-ld.". Once we'd laid down the 4 on the floor rhythm, I just couldn't stand the pointless, consonant-poor chorus any more so i voted for rock 'n roll nonsense instead. My son had been listening to Iggy Pop's "Now I wanna be your dog" and it fit really well with the rhythm. Couldn't use that, of course, so "Walk Your Dog" came to be. In the course of working the thing up as I drove around town, I was delighted to find some pithy rolling stones and bowie references to toss in, to give the thing some badly-needed heft. Its still a pretty dumb song, but a great and welcome step out of my constrictive comfort zone!

Walk Your Dog (Julia A. Kasdorf 1992)

Sitting in the blue light waiting to pass out
My mind is making dust my soul is checking out
Sleeping doesn’t work, drinking doesn’t pay
Its that half-light feeling at the corner of the day
But right now I just wanna walk your dog.

There’s a letter on the table a knock upon the door
Lisa loves the feeling yeah she’s coming back for more
Tim owes me money and Doug wants a date
Brian’s got a broken heart but that’s all gotta wait
Cause right now I just wanna walk your dog.

Maybe it’s a Friday, I’m sitting in the bar
Maybe it’s a Monday, I’m sleeping in my car
Maybe I’m from Venus, cause baby you’re from Mars
Where the meter comes out better on a stolen guitar.
