about

Long ago, we were flooded out of our home by Hurricane Isabel, and spent the night at our friends' house. There were 4 us crammed like the refugees we were in a guest room. On a morning when I should have woken up dreading the nightmare hassle confronting our lives, I found a new version of "Old Coat", a dismal old Peter Paul & Mary song, playing in my head. In spite of the crazy year that followed, I was able to powerfully realize the vision I'd awoken to by showing it to my bandmates in One Horse Town. It kicked then, and still kicks now.

lyrics

Old Coat (Stooky, Travers, Mezetti) arr. Julia Kasdorf, 2004

I looked to the east
I looked to the west
A youth begging fate to be rewardin’
But fortune is a blind god
Flying through the clouds
Forgetting me on this side of Jordan

Chorus
Take off your old coat
And roll up your sleeves
Life is a hard road to travel

Golden spoons to some mouths
Silver spoons to others
Dares a man to change the given order
Though they smile and tell me
All of us are brothers
Never heard it none this side of Jordan

Like a ragged owlet with its wings extended
Nailed to some garden gate or bordin’
Thus I will to some man all my life be branded
Never heard it none this side of Jordan

Chorus
Take off your old coat
And roll up your sleeves
Life is a hard road
Life is a hard road
Life is a hard road
to travel I believe (folked-out)
