about

I've had this song around for a while. I keep trying to record it just so, but never nailed it. Til now. I wanted that pulsing train drum, not too heavy, but hard enough to help the thing just lope along, and I got just what was required from Dwayne, the drummer. The song is about drifting and needs a light touch to keep it in the proper light. And I always thought "Motel" would be a good name for a record - such possibilities for the album cover!

When I first started recording vocals, I wanted to run screaming. I sucked! It was awful! I was pushing hard and getting no tone at all! That's because I'm used to singing live all the time. In the studio, its a different story. You want to relax, ease off, and just let the sounds fall out and let the microphone do the work. I finally figured out to do that, so now the tune is listenable. But the best part is the way Mike's guitar and Lynn's steel trade off and work together to shepherd the thing home.

lyrics

Motel (Julia A. Kasdorf, 2008)

I wanna hide in a motel
No one knows where I’m goin’
I won’t ever tell
Gonna hide in my own shell
Mmm

On dirt road, on a dark night
Dusty neon flashing by the road side
Slide a dollar, get my long night
Mmm

Ain’t no one calling
Ain’t no one on my mind
No one here to tell me
If Im doing right
Off the road
Stepping out of my light
Mmm

I want my own little door
To my own little world
Give me a number,
I don’t need a name
I wanna hide in a motel
Mmm

Won’t be smoking
And I won’t be drinking
With any luck at all
I won’t be thinking
Cut the line and just go driftin
Mmm

Hey the world turns without me tonight.
