about

My family had a farm where we spent a lot of time growing up. It was called Cold Saturday, and was a powerful place. Now the place has been sold, and sweet memories are captured in this haunting ballad.

lyrics

Cold Saturday ( Julia A. Kasdorf 1996)

1. Weekends come around
Momma packed us up for gettin' out of town
We was fussin' and whinin' and missing cartoons
To a beautiful place with a curious name
My grandma's farm was called Cold Saturday.

2. Too young to know we were blessed
Mama knew what was best
She seemed to know somehow
It couldn't last forever
Horses hooves on the road, smell of leather.

3. This old wooden door used to mystify
Tucked in the garden wall, cross over the threshold
And find that you were still
Crackin’ walnuts on the flagstones where they’d fallen.

4. Horses graze on the hill
Ride as far as you will and you'd never see
No high tension wires
It must've hurt my momma bad
Wantin' us to have what she had in a world on fire.

5. This water's swimmin' with shadows
Leap off the dock in the summertime
And hopin' that i'd never touch the bottom
In the winter time we'd skate
over the frozen face of the lake
Over leaves of autumn.

6. Twilight and fireflies
Hide and seek in the dwindling light
Grass stains on my knee.
Earth and grass, ice in a glass and company.

7. Father plays his guitar
Music calls us in from the dark to the circle of people
And farm dogs twitching and dreaming
Fall alseep at my mother's feet
Nothin' could sound as sweet as my daddy singing.

8. Now the place is gone
And we must all carry on thanking God for the treasures
he sends our way
Other places come and go
The sweetest memories that I know come from
Co-o-o-old Saturday 3x + out
